What is pet insurance?

Pet insurance is a policy for your pet that reimburses you for unexpected vet expenses (up to 90%) if they get sick or hurt.

What’s covered and what’s not?

We cover all conditions specified in the policy, but there are exclusions, such as preexisting conditions where your pet was showing signs or symptoms of those conditions before the exclusion periods end on your policy. Petsy Pet Insurance is designed for unexpected injuries and illnesses, and we don’t cover any routine, elective or preventative treatments.

What we cover

In the event of an unexpected injury or illness, the policy covers eligible vet costs for treatment. So, if your pet ate something toxic or dangerous, you will be covered for the cost of required medicine and/or surgery provided by a vet to treat your pet.

Treatment means the necessary medical care provided to Your Pet by or under the supervision of a Vet to relieve or cure an Illness or Injury.

It may include but not limited to reasonable and customary hospitalisation, surgery, x-rays, medication, diagnostic tests, nursing and other care and procedures.

Examples of accidental injuries:

Injuries due to a motor vehicle accident

Ingestion of foreign objects

Fractures

Poisoning

Bite wound or fight wound abscesses

Examples of illness:

Skin, Ear and Eye Conditions

Hip Dysplasia

Cruciate Ligament Conditions

Intervertebral Disc Disease

Cancer

What we don’t cover

Petsy Pet Insurance is designed to provide cover for the vet costs of treatment that is required to relieve or cure an unexpected illness or injury.

Pre-existing Conditions

Treatment of conditions that have occurred, have shown signs or symptoms and/or you knew about the condition (or a reasonable person in the circumstances could be expected to have known) prior to purchasing your policy or during an applicable exclusion period are considered Pre-existing Conditions, and are not covered.

Made for the unexpected

Preventative and routine items & treatments, such as general check-ups and vaccinations, things you would expect to do in order to keep your pet healthy, and elective procedures (including desexing) are not covered.

Exclusion Periods apply

An exclusion period is the amount of time during which no benefit is payable under the policy and this means you cannot claim for vet costs for treatment your pet receives in relation to an illness or injury which occurs during a exclusion period. In addition any condition that occurs, has shown signs or symptoms and/or you come to know about it during a exclusion period, will meet the definition of a Pre-existing Condition and will therefore be excluded from your cover.

Exclusion periods apply from the time your policy starts, even if you have decided to switch to Petsy Pet Insurance from another provider’s pet insurance policy, and also if you upgrade your level of cover with Petsy.

The current exclusion periods are:

  • 1 day for Injury (except Specified Conditions)
  • 14 days for Illness (except Specified Conditions)
  • 6 months for Specified Conditions
  • 6 months for Optional Behavioural Problems
  • Optional Dental Illness
  • 14 days for pets under 1-year-old
  • 6 months for pets 1-year-old and over

No one likes a cat-astrophe

Not to freak you out, but vet bills and exam fees can creep up quickly after an illness or emergency.

Surgery costs for removing something your pet accidentally ingested can run up to $15,000; even diabetes medication can cost you $1,200 a year.

Insurance is the one thing we pay for that we hope we never need to use. But, when needed, pet owners are relieved to have it.
